Rewind and Reframe is a distinctive academic and cultural initiative of BPFTIO that brings eminent personalities from diverse creative and intellectual fields – such as literature, art, culture, music, architecture, theatre, and cinema – into meaningful interaction with students.
The programme explores the life journeys, creative processes, and perspectives of these distinguished individuals, offering students valuable insights into the depth and diversity of creative practice. It encourages learners to reflect on the past (“Rewind”) and reinterpret it within contemporary contexts (“Reframe”), fostering critical thinking, inspiration, and creative growth.

Inauguration
Rewind and Reframe, conceptualized by Prof. Himansu Sekhar Khatua, Chairman of BPFTIO, is a flagship talk series designed as a weekly interactive platform for meaningful dialogue with eminent personalities from diverse creative fields.
The inaugural session was graced by Sri Ananta Mahapatra, renowned thespian and director, in the esteemed presence of Padma Shri Adwaita Gadnayak, distinguished sculptor. The session marked the beginning of a thoughtful exchange of ideas, experiences, and creative perspectives.
Held every Thursday, Rewind & Reframe aims to explore the life, work, and journeys of accomplished individuals, enabling the transmission of their knowledge, values, and creative vision across generations.

This week, we revisit a powerful classic of Odia cinema — Kanakalata (1974), directed by Ghanashyam Mohapatra. Adapted from the renowned novel by Nanda Kishore Bal, Kanakalata is a poignant reflection on the harsh realities of rural aristocratic society. The film boldly critiques the deeply rooted dowry system and sheds light on the tragic lives of child widows—women condemned to endure lifelong suffering, isolation, and emotional turmoil.
Through its sensitive storytelling and social realism, Kanakalata remains a timeless voice against injustice, urging audiences to reflect, question, and empathize.
Rewind & Reframe at BPFTIO: A Memorable Cinematic Event
The Rewind & Reframe session at BPFTIO turned into a truly enriching and nostalgic cinematic experience with the gracious presence of eminent cine artist Dr. Tripura Mishra. The occasion was marked by the screening of her acclaimed Odia film Subarna Sita, a classic that continues to resonate even after four decades.
The students were deeply moved and overwhelmed witnessing a film created 40 years ago, yet so relevant in its storytelling and emotional depth. Every aspect of the film—be it cinematography, sound design, editing, or particularly its soulful songs and music—struck a powerful chord with the audience. The film served not just as entertainment but as an insightful learning experience for aspiring filmmakers.
The programme was skillfully conducted on stage by Prof. Himansu Khatua (Chairman, BPFTIO) who guided the session with thoughtful engagement and interaction. His presence added intellectual depth to the event, encouraging students to appreciate the nuances of classic filmmaking.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from all BPFTIO staff and students, creating a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere. It was not merely a screening but a celebration of cinematic heritage, learning, and inspiration—bridging generations through the timeless language of film.

This Thursday on Rewind and Reframe at BPFTIO, a masterclass by Himansu Sekhar Khatua transforms the lecture hall into a living laboratory, where truth often feels stranger than fiction.

The session features screenings of two of his acclaimed documentary masterpieces, “The Sea and Seven Villages” and “Mahima Alekha”, offering a profound glimpse into his cinematic vision and storytelling depth.

We were honored to host Dr. Ramesh Prasad Panigrahi – eminent writer, director, and educationalist – whose enriching interaction left a lasting impact on students and faculty alike.
The session was gracefully conducted by Himanshu Khatua, Chairman, with active participation from students and staff. Dr. Panigrahi shared deep insights into storytelling, drama, film language, and creative writing, while also thoughtfully answering students’ questions.
The event concluded with the screening of his film Soubhagyavati, offering students a valuable exposure to cinematic writing style and narrative structure through practice and experience.

Through personal experiences, practical insights, and thought-provoking discussions, Sri Mohapatra shared his journey in film production, direction, storytelling, and the evolving landscape of the film industry, inspiring young filmmakers to pursue excellence with dedication and creativity.
The session was gracefully conducted by Prof. Himanshu Sekhar Khatua, Chairman, BPFTIO, with enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and staff. Rewind & Reframe Inspires Students with Renowned Lyricist & Dialogue Writer Sri Shirsananda Das Kanungo
Where Words Become Emotion, Stories Find Their Voice
The latest edition of Rewind & Reframe – A BPFTIO Thursday Talk Series brought an enriching opportunity for students to interact with Sri Shirsananda Das Kanungo, one of the respected names in Odia cinema, known for his remarkable contribution as a lyricist and dialogue writer.
With a career spanning several decades, Sri Shirsananda Das Kanungo has made a significant contribution to Odia films through his evocative lyrics and memorable dialogues. His work as a lyricist extends across more than 65 films, while his writing credits include dialogues for around 24 Odia films.
His journey into cinema reflects the evolution of Odia film music and storytelling itself. He gained recognition through the Yuvavani programme of Akashvani, before entering the world of cinema with Anutap in 1977, where director Jalal Adeni gave him his first opportunity as a film lyricist. He subsequently collaborated with several prominent personalities of Odia cinema, including the legendary musician and composer Akshaya Mohanty.
During the interaction, Sri Das Kanungo shared valuable insights into the art of writing lyrics and dialogues for cinema, explaining how words must connect with the emotions, characters, situations, and visual language of a film. His experiences offered students a deeper understanding of how a simple line of dialogue or a carefully crafted lyric can become an integral part of a cinematic narrative.
His contribution can be seen across several notable Odia films. He was associated with films such as Suna Panjuri, Magunira Shagada, Asuchi Mo Kalia Suna, Singha Bahini, Sata Michha, Rakhi Bhijigala Aakhi Luha Re and many others as lyricist and/or dialogue writer.
One particularly notable work is ** Magunira Shagada **, the Odia film that won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Odia for 2001. Sri Das Kanungo contributed to the film as its lyricist.
His writing journey also demonstrates the close relationship between literature, music, dialogue and cinema. From popular film songs to character-driven dialogues, his work reflects the power of the Odia language to communicate emotion, culture and human experience on screen.
The interactive session gave BPFTIO students an opportunity to listen to the experiences of a veteran creative professional and understand the discipline behind cinematic writing. His insights encouraged students to look beyond technical aspects of filmmaking and recognise the importance of language, observation, emotion, imagination and storytelling in creating meaningful cinema.
The session proved to be an enriching experience, leaving students inspired by Sri Shirsananda Das Kanungo’s remarkable journey and his enduring contribution to Odia cinema.

Rewind & Reframe Celebrates the Literary Legacy of Sri Santanu Kumar Acharya
Where Words Become Thought, Stories Become Windows to Life
The latest edition of Rewind & Reframe – A BPFTIO Thursday Talk Series brought an enriching literary experience for students through an interaction with Prof. Santanu Kumar Acharya, one of the most distinguished voices in modern Odia literature.
A celebrated novelist, short-story writer, children’s writer, columnist and academician, Sri Santanu Kumar Acharya has made an enduring contribution to Odia literature through his distinctive storytelling, thoughtful narratives and exploration of contemporary human and social realities. He has authored numerous novels and short-story collections, along with works for children, travel writing and other literary forms.
His literary journey began at a young age, but it was his landmark novel Nara Kinnara (1962) that established him as a significant figure in modern Odia fiction. The novel received the Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award and is regarded as an important work in the development of modern Odia literature.
Over the years, Sri Acharya enriched Odia literature with acclaimed works such as Shatabdira Nachiketa, Tinoti Ratira Sakal, Dakshinabarta, Shakuntala, Dharitrira Kanda, Anu Hajijiba Pare and Anomara Kanya, alongside numerous celebrated short stories including Durbara, Adina Baula, Sarpajana and Chalanti Thakura.
His contribution has been recognised with several prestigious honours. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993 for his short-story collection Chalanti Thakura, the Sarala Puraskar for Shakuntala, and the Atibadi Jagannath Das Award for his lifetime contribution to Odia literature. He was also a recipient of the National Award for Children’s Literature on two occasions.
A particularly inspiring aspect of Sri Acharya’s journey is the unique intersection of science, education and literature in his life. Trained in Chemistry, he pursued a long academic career and eventually retired as the Registrar of Utkal University, while simultaneously establishing himself as one of Odisha’s leading literary figures.
During the interaction with BPFTIO students, Sri Acharya’s presence offered an opportunity to look at storytelling from beyond the technical aspects of filmmaking. His literary journey highlighted the importance of observation, human experience, imagination, language and social awareness—qualities that form the foundation of powerful storytelling in cinema as well as literature.
The session encouraged students to understand that every compelling film begins with a compelling story, and that the strength of a storyteller lies not merely in technique, but in the ability to observe life, understand people and transform experience into meaningful narratives.
The interaction proved to be an intellectually stimulating and inspiring experience for the BPFTIO community. Sri Santanu Kumar Acharya’s remarkable journey reminded students that creativity is a lifelong pursuit—one strengthened by curiosity, discipline, learning and a deep engagement with society.
